Endometriosis and Acupuncture: What Kiiko Matsumoto-Style Treatment Can Actually Offer

By Shannon Domingo, L.Ac.

Endometriosis pain relief with acupuncture, Kirkland WA

If you have endometriosis, you already know the drill: years to get diagnosed, pain that gets dismissed as "just bad periods," and a treatment menu that often boils down to hormonal birth control, pain medication, or surgery. Acupuncture isn't a replacement for any of those, but it's an option that's been missing from a lot of people's toolkits, mostly because they've never seen it done well.

What's actually happening with endometriosis

Endometrial-like tissue growing outside the uterus causes inflammation, scar tissue, and pain that can show up well beyond your period, during ovulation, during sex, during digestion. It's a whole-body inflammatory condition, not just a "period problem," which is exactly why treating it needs to look at more than just the pelvis.

How acupuncture fits in

Acupuncture works on endometriosis from a few angles at once:

  • Reducing inflammation systemically, not just locally
  • Improving pelvic blood flow, which affects both pain and tissue health
  • Calming the nervous system, because chronic pain conditions like endo often involve a nervous system that's stuck in a heightened, protective state
  • Supporting hormonal balance without adding synthetic hormones to the mix

Why the diagnostic approach matters more with endo than almost anything else

Endometriosis presents differently in every single patient. Where the pain shows up, what triggers it, how it moves through the cycle, that's all individual. A generic point protocol treats "endometriosis" as a category. Palpation-based, Japanese-style treatment treats the person in front of me. In my Kiiko Matsumoto-lineage practice, I'm feeling the abdomen at every visit, checking reactive points, and adjusting treatment to what's actually reactive that day, not what a chart says should be needled for "endo." This matters because endo pain moves. What's flared this week might not be what's flared next week. This is also worth saying clearly: this isn't TCM as it's commonly practiced in the US, and it isn't dry needling. It's its own diagnostic system, and for a condition this individualized, that specificity is the whole point.

Where acupuncture fits alongside medical care

I'm not going to tell you to skip your OB-GYN or your pelvic pain specialist. Endometriosis often needs a team: sometimes surgery, sometimes hormonal management, sometimes pelvic floor PT. Acupuncture works well as part of that team, especially for the pain management and inflammation piece, and especially for people who are being told their only option is hormonal birth control and don't want that to be the only tool in the box.

What to expect

Expect questions about your full pain pattern, not just "when's your period." Expect abdominal palpation. Expect a treatment plan that shifts as your cycle and symptoms shift, not a copy-paste protocol from visit to visit.

Based in Kirkland

I'm one of the few practitioners in Washington offering this specific style of Japanese acupuncture. If you've tried acupuncture before for endo and it felt generic or didn't move the needle (sorry), this is a different approach worth trying.
