Can Acupuncture Actually Help with Infertility? What a Japanese-Style Approach Looks Like

By Shannon Domingo, L.Ac.

Fertility acupuncture support, Kirkland WA

If you've typed "acupuncture for infertility" into Google at 11pm after another negative test, first: I see you. Second: let's talk about what acupuncture can actually do here, because the internet is full of vague promises and not a lot of specifics.

The short answer

Acupuncture doesn't replace reproductive endocrinology. It's not going to reverse a diagnosis on its own. What it does really well is support the systems that need to be working well for conception to happen: blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, hormonal regulation, nervous system regulation, and inflammation. Think of it less as "fixing infertility" and more as optimizing the environment your body is trying to conceive in.

Why palpation-based, Japanese-style treatment matters here

Most people picture acupuncture as a set protocol: needle these ten points for "fertility," every time, for every patient. That's not how I practice, and it's a big part of why my patients notice a difference. I trained in the Kiiko Matsumoto lineage, a Japanese-style approach built on palpation. That means every treatment starts with feeling the abdomen, checking specific diagnostic points, and letting your body tell me what's actually going on that day, not what a textbook says should be happening on cycle day 14. Hormones shift week to week. Stress shows up in the body differently for everyone. A protocol-only approach misses that. This is not TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as most people picture it, and it's not dry needling. It's a distinct diagnostic system, and for something as cyclical and individual as fertility, that distinction matters a lot.

What acupuncture can support during a fertility journey

  • Ovulation quality, by supporting healthy hormone signaling
  • Uterine lining and blood flow, which matters for implantation
  • Stress and cortisol, because your nervous system and reproductive system are in constant conversation with each other
  • IVF and IUI support, timed around retrieval and transfer to support the body through a physically demanding process
  • Underlying conditions like PCOS or endometriosis that are contributing to the infertility in the first place

What to expect if you come in

Your first visit isn't a ten-minute chat and a pincushion routine. I'm going to ask about your cycle, your history, your stress load, your sleep, and I'm going to palpate your abdomen to see what your body is actually telling me. Treatment from there is specific to you, and it changes as your cycle and your journey change.

A note on timelines

Acupuncture works with your body's own rhythms, and that means it's not usually a one-and-done fix. Most people trying to conceive come in weekly, sometimes adjusting frequency around key points in their cycle or treatment protocol. If you're working with a fertility clinic, I'm happy to coordinate around your timeline.

If you're in Kirkland or the greater Seattle area

I'm one of the only practitioners in Washington state offering this specific Japanese, Kiiko Matsumoto-style approach. If you've tried the standard fertility acupuncture route and felt like you were getting a generic protocol instead of an actual assessment of your body, this might be a different experience for you.
