The "Cold Uterus" – Why Cold Feet (and Cold Plunges) Might Be Ruining Your Period

If you were to come into my office at Sundays Acupuncture and say, "I have incredibly painful periods, can you help me?" one of the very first things I’m going to ask you is: Are your feet always cold? It might sound like a strange question for a gynecological concern, but in East-Asian Medicine, the connection is profound. If you are a female and your feet are constantly freezing—even when you’re wearing wool socks, cashmere, and sheepskin boots—as an acupuncturist, I am immediately worried. Why? Because if your feet are cold, it is a glaring indication that your uterus is cold.

The Danger of a 'Cold Uterus'

Your uterus is a highly blood-filled, vascular area. For healthy, pain-free menstrual cycles, that blood needs to be warm and free-flowing. Cold does exactly what you’d expect it to do: it slows things down and congeals. When your uterus is cold, the blood is not freely circulating. It gets stagnant. And when blood gets stagnant in our reproductive organs, we start to see the development of frustrating and painful conditions, including:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Non-cancerous masses
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Painful periods due to heavy clotting

The Problem with the Cold Plunge Trend for Women

Right now, cold plunging is everywhere. But here is my reminder to you: the widespread cold plunging trend was popularized by men. Men simply do not have to worry about the implications of extreme cold on their reproductive blood flow the way women do. Our female parts are deeply dependent on rich, circulating blood. Constantly exposing yourself to ice baths means your blood is constantly being congealed and slowed down. If you struggle with your cycle, cold plunging might be doing more harm than good.

A Personal Note

I personally love the mental challenge of a cold plunge, but I only do it during my ovulatory phase (and I am currently not trying to get pregnant). I know my body, and I know that exposing myself to extreme cold at the wrong time in my cycle will lead to a painful period, and in my case, potentially more fibroids. It is simply not worth it.

How to Warm Your Uterus and Find Relief

Keeping your feet warm isn't just about throwing on extra layers; it’s about warming them at a thermal level to increase systemic circulation. My Go-To At-Home Remedy: Ginger and Turmeric foot soaks (careful this can stain the vessel you're using). Ginger is incredibly warming at a thermal level, and turmeric is fantastic for boosting circulation. Taking consistent, warm foot soaks can be life-changing for achieving painless periods.

If you are dealing with painful periods, clots, or difficulty conceiving, warming your system is step one. But to truly get the blood free-flowing again, you need to address the root of the stagnation. At Sundays Acupuncture, I practice Japanese-style acupuncture and am particularly skilled in the Kiiko Matsumoto method, which utilizes gentle palpation to find exactly where your body is holding onto stagnation.
